Ladies take 4 steps forward to reach the opposite side. (4) – All turn right half around to face across (Flare to add some style to the turn.) A2 (16) – Dancers repeat the actions in A1 to return to their own side. B1 (8) – Top two couples Circle Left 3/4. This puts both gents facing the head and the ladies facing down. (8) – Gents arch and the ladies pass their own partner by the right shoulder and run around him to end facing him. (Right-hand lady will dive down through the arch and run around her partner. Left-hand lady will run around her partner and dive up through the arch.) Ladies will face their partner, join two hands and turn clockwise one-quarter to place ladies on the left and gents on the right. B2 (16) – Top two couples will sashay down the center to the bottom. Winning couple forms on the bottom of the line followed by the losing couple. (It doesn’t really matter who forms on first – it’s all in fun.) The dance continues at least until all couples have performed the figure and the original head couples are back at the head position.

Four Dancer Action with Whole Set Progression

THE WANDERER
By Calvin Campbell and the Metro State Class Formation: Proper Line of four couples Music: LS 185, "The Happy Wanderer" A1 (8) Head couple Separate to the foot; (8) Weave the line; (Come in to the center of the set and weave out between 3 and 4 and then weave in between 2 and 3.) A2 (8) All Swing Partner and return to line; (8) Lines go Forward and Back; B1 (8) With the couple across Star Right; (8) Star Left; B2 (8) Arch and Sashay through the tunnel; (Couples 2, 3 and 4 form a tunnel with two-hand arches and the top couple slide though the tunnel to the foot of the set) (8) Lines go Forward and Back; FARMER'S JIG Formation: Contra lines of four couples with partner’s facing each other, ladies on the prompter’s left and gents on the prompter’s right. When necessary, any partner combinations will work. More than four couples cannot complete the figure in the time allowed. Music: Any brisk 64 beat marching music, or a brisk jig. Sashay: With both hands joined, partners slide sideways in 8 quick Gallop or Sashay Steps (Side and Close 7 times, then Side and Touch) up the hall. Or dancers can sedately do Side, Close, three times, then Side, Touch. Partners slide sideways the other way back down the hall. Stars: Each box of 4 dancers Star Right for 8 beats. Same 4 dancers Star Left the other way back for 8 beats. Finish with all the ladies in the left line and all the gents in the right line. Cast Down: All dancers turn individually to face the prompter. Each dancer in the top couple (nearest the prompter) then turns away from the center to lead a Single File Promenade down the outside of each line to the foot of the set. The leaders join both hands to make an arch at the foot. All the others come through the arch in pairs and move forward ready to immediately begin the March up 8. The original leaders become the last couple while the original second couple is now at the top.

OXO Variations

OXO REEL - 1975

Virginia Reel

VIRGINIA NO REEL

Music: TNT 106 "Fiddler's Fancy" or LS 318 "Januray 7th Jig"> A1 (8) Everybody Forward and Back; (8) Turn your partner right hand around; A2 (8) Turn your partner left hand around; (8) Turn your partner both hands around; B1 (8) First couple slide to the foot; (8) Same two slide back to the top; B2 (8) Cast Off single file to the foot; (8) Leading couple make a both-hands-joined arch and the others duck thru; VIRGINIA REEL Traditional Formation: Four to six couples in a column, partners facing across the set, all the men in a line on the caller’s right, all the ladies in a line on the caller’s left, lines about four steps apart. The number one couple is at the caller’s end of the set (head or top). There are many variations of the partner interaction at the beginning. The sashay down and back followed by the Reel the Set are the essential parts. Depending on the number of dancers and their efficiency, the timing will often not fit the 64-count musical sequence. Try to precue the 8-count musical phrase. MUSIC: "Virginia Reel", Folkcraft 1456 or 1150 (Note: one couple takes at least 2 sets of 64 beats so for six couples 2 x 6 = 12 repeats are needed) A1 (8) All go forward and bow and back; (8) Once more forward and back; A2 (8) Turn your partner right hand around; (8) Turn your partner left hand around; B1 (8) Turn your partner both hands around; (8) All go forward and do sa do; B2 (8) First couple sashay down; (8) Re-sashay come back to place; A1 (8) *First couple reel the set; Turn Partner right 1 1/2, Left to 2nds; (8) Left to 2nd couple, Right to partner; A2 (8) Left to 3rd couple, Right to partner; (8) Left to 4th couple, Right to partner; B1 (8) Left to 5th couple, Right to partner to turn half and face up; (8) Actives sashay or strut up the middle; B2 (8) Actives Separate and lead all of their line in a Cast Down; (8) First couple arch and the rest come up through the arch. *Reel the Set: Top couple turn right arm once and a half around with each other, then turn left arm around the next dancer in the opposite line, back to partner right arm turn once around, left with the next down the opposite line, etc. (The #1 man will turn each lady all the way down the line of ladies and the #1 lady will turn each man all the way down the line of men.) After reeling all the way to the foot the #1 couple will sashay back to the head of the set, separate and lead all the dancers in their own line down the outside of their own line. The #1 couples makes a two hand arch at the foot and the rest of the dancers go below the arch and come up through the arch with the original second couple now at the top.
