Brief Descriptions of the Dance Formations Listed Above

Proper Line is long lines with partners facing and all ladies in left line and gents in right line.
Proper Duple is a proper line where the dancing occurs mostly within groups of four dancers.
Alternate Duple is long lines with partners facing with ladies and gents alternating in each line.

Triplet is a contra lines of three couples.
Triple is contra line where the dancing occurs mostly within groups of six dancers.
Trio is a big circle with groups of three dancers arranged like spokes of a wheel.

Becket is contra lines of couples facing couples.
Sicilian Circle is facing couples with the groups of four arranged in a big circle like spokes of a wheel.
Concentric Circle is facing couples with the groups of four arranged with one couple back-to-the center.

English Country is a different style of contra dancing that is usually danced in Proper Duples.
Mescolanza is two couples facing two couples and back-to-back with another such group of eight dancers.
Five Dancers is a contra designed for just five dancers.

Mixer is usually couples dancing in a big circle and changing partners after each sequence.
Traditional Square is danced in a square of four couples.
Other is a catch-all for other formations that might be used during a contra dance.
